With the advent of Internet, people got to know about many different ways to earn money. Getting the bulk of web traffic and targeting the visitors for advertisements is one of the commonly used business models. People started blogging, writing informative article, etc. and many such activities were initiated. Let us understand about most successful Internet businesses through this article.

Successful Internet Business Ideas

The important Internet businesses considered to be successful are described in short, in the paragraphs below. Here are some interesting Internet business ideas.

Article Marketing: The business of article marketing is considered to be one of the most successful in recent times. In this business, advertising of products and services is carried out by submitting content to article directories. The article directories which attract lot of web traffic are considered to be good from the point of article marketing. Search engines filter out those articles with duplicate content. ‘Article spinning’ is a tactic used by these marketers to prevent the search engines from filtering their articles. In this technique, the existing article are re-written to avoid duplication and sent to multiple directories. A lot of income can be generated from the activity of article marketing.

Social Networking: It is also one of the most successful Internet businesses. A social networking website provides platform for people to connect with friends, family and other professionals. There are many social networking sites which serve members worldwide.

Blogging: This is a good business opportunity over the Internet. One can earn through different pay-per-click campaigns started by search engines. Earning through advertisements too is possible. This field is much similar to that of article marketing. Blogging is done to express strong ideas about a particular topic, to market a product, to take part in an important ongoing discussion, etc. Just like any other business opportunity, this field too holds a potential to be one of the successful Internet business models.

Search Engine Optimization: The different activities which contribute to improving visibility of a particular website are together termed as search engine optimization (SEO). The results generated through search engine optimization are considered as ‘natural’. This is because, one doesn’t pay for getting their particular website to get ranked. In order to get ‘natural’ search results, either the algorithmic or ‘organic’ ways of search engine optimization are used. The search engine optimizers avoid practices like ‘article spinning’, ‘keyword stuffing’, etc. to maintain the search engine rankings.

Forum Marketing: The business of forum marketing can be highly effective in carrying out marketing of products and services. This way, one would be able to target a group of net savvy Internet users with interest in certain topics. One has to have thorough knowledge of the subject he is going to put forth in a forum. Success of the business lies in how effectively can a person present before forum members the facts pertaining to a given product service. A good user name and seniority in the forum builds up a good image of the marketers in forums. While performing forum marketing, one should interact with other members. Merely presenting information about the product/service won’t be enough. The information about online business ideas should prove to be useful.

How to Start a Successful Internet Business
To start a successful Internet business, one should gain knowledge of all the business opportunities available on the Internet. Filing a name that is recognized by the government should be the first step in the process of starting business. Obtaining an EIN number is necessary. This is done after the business entity gets registered.

How To Market Your Business Online Successfully

The world of Internet marketing is very vast and exciting. There are so many ways that one can enter and use their knowledge of this field to help promote their business and stand out. It depends completely on the individual. That said, no matter what your marketing skills are, here are some tips to help you out.

Internet marketing is an essential component to businesses everywhere. Businesses can utilize the internet to market their products and services. They do this by tailoring their marketing campaigns to the designated target markets based on overall geographic location, age, gender, occupation and other factors. This assist businesses in boosting their brand, sales and beyond.

Many people marketing their business on the internet also choose affiliate marketing to help them gain exposure in their market. What this creates is a reciprocal helpful scenario that is automatically generated by teaming up with other businesses in a network. Try affiliate marketing in your internet marketing endeavors.

You should reward the visitors that have given you help, by promoting their links on your homepage. This will help in two ways: It will show users that helping is rewarded, prompting them to do it more. And, it shows that you appreciate all of your users.

Internet Marketing

An interesting internet marketing tip is to use the ‘bill me later’ option for payment on products. Some people may view this as risky, but for the most part, people do end up paying their bills. This is a great way to get business from people who are short on funds at the moment.

Integrate social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter into your Internet marketing efforts. Social media websites keep you in constant contact with your visitors, providing a fast, easy way to send out updates or promotions. However, beware of being overly promotional in your comments and tweets. Instead, provide valuable, insightful posts with the occasional marketing message mixed in.

Internet Marketing Business

When you’re blogging to improve your internet marketing business, who you link to matters. The best links are links to timely, updated informational resources in your niche. These links build trust and keep customers coming back. In some cases, it may even be a good strategy to link to competitors if they know more about a certain aspect of your niche than you do.

To succeed in internet marketing, monitoring and measuring your results is key. If you carefully monitor your web traffic, return on investment, conversions and sales, you will get a better sense of how well your internet marketing operation is running and where you can improve it. Without measuring and monitoring, you will be unaware of the trends in your internet marketing business.

Internet Marketing Strategies

You cannot match every internet marketing strategy to every business. The best way to pick the strategies that will work for you is to balance the trends of your market niche and the amount of money you are going to spend. Certain products and services only work with certain strategies. Some internet marketing strategies rely on adequate funding, in order to work properly.

For a successful internet marketing campaign, consider doing online market research. Search for your brand, product or services and look at what people are saying on blogs, forums and social network sites. This may give you an idea of what people are actually thinking about your current marketing efforts, thus providing valuable insight that you can incorporate into your internet marketing strategies moving forward.

Internet marketing is a fascinating and exciting world that is only limited by the extent of a person’s budget. There are endless possibilities, tools, combinations and techniques. Start experimenting to find something new for yourself or to learn something new that you can improve upon for your own marketing plan.

Top 10 Tips to Sell Your Website or Blog on Flippa

If you are planning to buy or sell a website, you probably already heard about Flippa. It is the largest online marketplace for websites. Most people who list a website for sale there, however, end up selling it for peanuts (e.g., $100), or not selling at all.

How come? Most of the times the seller didn’t do his homework. If you want to maximize your chances of selling (and your profit), the 10 tips below will help you.

1. Make Sure Your Website Is Making Money

This is the most important factor. If you want to sell a website successfully, it must be making money. Even if your site has a huge traffic, listing it before monetizing that traffic would be a bad decision. You would be able to sell it, but the money you would get would be far below the real value of the site.

If your website is making $50 or less per month, forget about selling it now. Try to improve your traffic, increase your revenues to at least $300 per month, make the revenues stable, and then list it. If the $300 are coming from Google AdSense, for example, you could sell the site for as much as $8,000. Obviously, the more you can grow your revenue before selling, the better. The $300 is just a ball park figure.

Remember that you’ll need to show proof of revenue, and that most buyers will calculate the revenues as the average of the past four or six months.

2. Make Sure You Have Google Analytics Data

Most serious buyers will want to see your Google Analytics data before making an official offer. They will use this to verify your traffic levels, and to make sure the pattern is compatible with the revenues you are claiming.

Again, people will want to see data going back to six months at least. If you are planning to sell your website, therefore, it would be wise to install Google Analytics on it at least six months before the sale.

3. Work On Your Trust Rating

Each member on Flippa has a trust rating, and most buyers will check it before placing their bids. In other words, the higher your trust rating, the higher the chances of selling your website.

As a result you should take all the actions that will improve your trust rating (e.g., connect your Flippa account with Facebook and LinkedIn, verify your phone number and so on).

4. Set The Auction Length for 7 Days

In my opinion seven days is the optimal length for an auction on Flippa. With that length of time you are sure that most buyers will see your auction (e.g., those who log during the week and those who log during weekends), yet you’ll create a sense of urgency on those who are interested.

Many people set the auction length for 30 days, and their auctions become dead as a consequence. Many interested buyers will refrain from bidding because there is plenty of time to go, others yet will see the auction once and then completely forget about it, for the same reason.

5. Set A Low Reserve / High Minimum Bid

If you set a low reserve price your auction will display the following message: “Bidding open and reserve has been met!” bright green color. This is a big encouragement for potential buyers, and it stimulates them to bid.

And don’t worry about the site selling for less than what you think it is worth. You can always set a high minimum bid. Apart from protecting you from low bids this strategy will also filter the non-serious buyers out.

6. Set A Reasonable BIN Price

The “Buy It Now” price is there for a reason. It should allow a buyer who is very interested in your website to avoid a bidding war and to buy the website paying what you think it is worth.

The problem is that most sellers have an unrealistic idea about the value of their websites, and hence they set crazy BIN prices. This is a put off for potential buyers, because it signals you have no idea about what you are doing.

Ask some friends what they think your website is worth, and then set a reasonable BIN price for it.

7. Don’t Hype Your Description

The more hype you put in your description, the more people will think you are desperate to sell and that your website is not a solid one. Examples of remarks you should avoid include: “Huge potential!”, “A lifetime opportunity!”, “My loss is your gain!”.

Secondly, don’t hypothesize what the website could be earning. Some people list websites that are making $10 per month currently, and they go on saying: “This website has the potential to make $4,000 per month easily!”. If you knew this for sure you wouldn’t be selling the site for such a low price….

8. Answer to Every Comment

Even if you write a crystal clear description people will still have questions, and they’ll ask them through the comment section. It is important to answer to every single comment, as this will not only encourage these commenters to place a bid, but it will also improve the overall credibility of your auction.

Second, do not delete a comment unless you have a very good reason to do so. Deleted comments are red flags on Flippa, because usually they come from sellers trying to hide something on their websites.

9. Have A Plausible Reason for Selling

One of the first things people will ask you is why you are selling. If there is no plausible reason, they’ll rightly assume that the website is going down hill, and that you want to get rid of it before it becomes worthless.

In fact it would be a good idea to include the reason for selling the description of the auction itself.

10. Invite Qualified Buyers

If you want to get more bids on your auction, you can invite qualified buyers directly. First of all browse through the marketplace looking for websites that are similar to yours (either open or won auctions).

Once you find one, browse through the comments, and try to find users with a high trust rating that were asking questions about the auction. These are qualified buyers, and you can send them a message inviting them to view your own auction.

Bonus Tip: Keep Your Auction On The Homepage

When creating your listing, the most important upgrade you can get is the “Listing Featured on the Front Page” one. It costs $29, but it will give your auction a lot of visibility, because most buyers browse the Flippa front page first.

You can purchase this upgrade a second time, too, once your auction slipped to the second page. This would be a good idea if after the first two or three days you have still not received some qualified bids.

Google Transparency Report Now Shows User Data Requests

The Google Transparency Report has been updated to include data on Government requests for user information. The U.S. made requests for over 11,000 accounts in the first half of 2011 alone, making them the leader in user data requests. The transparency report was first released last year. The new version gives both updated data for the first half of 2011 and adds the details on user data requests. Not all information is included in the report, as some government orders require non-disclosure.

What We See in User Data Requests

As is the case in so many categories, the U.S. is a real leader here; there were 5,950 U.S. user data requests in the first half of 2011 alone. Those requests covered 11,057 total accounts. Google complied, in whole or in part, with 93% of those requests. As noted by wired, this indicates a 23% up-spike in U.S. user data requests when comparing Q3 & 4 of 2010 with Q1 & 2 of 2011.

The country with the next highest user data requests was India, which requested information on 2,493 accounts. Only 70% of those requets were complied with. The third through seventh most requests came from Brazil, Germany, France, the UK, and Italy, respectively. Each of these countries requested data from between one and two thousand user accounts. Google’s 93% compliance rating in the U.S. is the highest global compliance in this category. Google notes the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, which allows government data requests without warrants, as a major contributor.

Other Report Highlights

While the full report has plenty of data to sort through, here are some of the more interesting take-aways:

  • In the U.S., officials requested that YouTube videos of police brutality and content that allegedly defamed law enforcement officials be removed. Google did not comply with these requests.
  • Brazil made the most content removal requests. As noted by the next web, this is likely due to the popularity of the Orkut social network.
  • China made only three requests, total. Each requested the removal of large amounts of data. However, Google only complied with two of the requests, and cited AdWords violations as the reason for removal in both cases. No user data was requested, as Google doesn’t keep such data in the country anymore.
  • Several regions, including India, made requests for the removal of material that violated local laws. Google generally gave partial compliance by blocking the content for the region without removing it from the core index.
  • The number of content removal and user account requests varied wildly in countries across the world. The fewest requests came from Hungary (0 requests of either type). From there, we range from the Switzerland-level (Switzerland had fewer than 10 content removal requests and just 36 user data requests) all the way up to the U.S. (11,000+ user data requests and 92 removal requests that targeted 757 total items.)

The Push for Open Data and New Regulation

Google’s motive for the release of this data is “to offer up some metrics to contribute to a public conversation about the laws that influence how people communicate online,” as stated on the official google blog. Beyond the general usefulness of the raw data, Google hopes to push forward with a couple different projects. First, Google is inviting other companies to join the opennet transparency project, which creates a standardized format for similar government request data. This both allows for further raw data and allows developers to re-crunch and analyze the data in new ways.

Additionally, Google is continuing its push for new policies regarding internet data. As part of the digital due process group – which also includes Amazon, AOL, AT&T, Dropbox, Facebook, and Microsoft – Google is pushing for reform of the 25-year-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). Google has long stated that ECPA needs to be modernized.

Microsoft Banning Sites from Live.com For Link Exchanges

A search engine watch forum post has the first documented, public, case, that I have seen of someone receiving an email from the Live (MSN) Search team for being banned for using link exchanges. Here is the email as reported in the forums:

Your site is acquiring links through posting to or exchanging links with sites unrelated to your site content. Techniques which attempt to acquire unrelated spam links in order to increase ranking are considered spam and your site has been excluded from our index as results. Please contact us once you’ve removed these links and we will reevaluate.

So, Microsoft is making an effort on spam. But I believe, not 100% sure, the way Google handles unrelated links to your site, is by not banning your site, but not counting those links. Unless, of course, it is a clear and transparent attempt for you to hurt the search results. Of course, I do believe Google applies the minus 30 penalty to some sites participating in some link exchanges or communities that are outright done for the purpose of ranking well.

Google TV to get massive Android software update

Google TV had such potential when it launched in October 2010. But for many users, the lack of Hulu — along with the awkwardness of the interface and lack of cooperation from TV networks and content providers — was a huge turnoff. Now Google aims to fix that with a massive overhaul, upgrading Google TV with its Android operating system.

Google announced on its Google TV blog Friday that the platform will be upgraded to Android 3.1 (otherwise known as Honeycomb) for Sony devices Sunday, with the Logitech Revue set-top box getting its upgrade “soon thereafter.”

What will you get with this software upgrade to Android? Google says it’s “much simpler.” Its customization capabilities will go a long way toward alleviating the awkwardness of its first iteration, which Google admits was “not perfect.”And the addition of the android Market will open up a variety of applications, with the promise of more — perhaps thousands more — on the way. One welcome improvement will be an easier ability to search across all the TV shows at your disposal. With this update, Google’s trying to answer that age-old question, “What’s on?” If Google can pull that off, it could be a powerful thing indeed.

The company says it has learned from its mistakes with the first version of Google TV and is “committed to find the best way to discover and engage with the high-quality entertainment on your television.” So does that mean Google TV will be able to find all the shows from whichever cable or satellite provider you’re subscribing to, or from the web via all of the apps within Google TV, such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and HBO Go? Maybe. Of course, Google plans to improve Google TV’s search across YouTube, its own video streaming service.

In the blog post, Google also hinted at future software updates (Ice Cream Sandwich, anyone?) and new devices “on new chipsets from multiple hardware partners.” Hey, this is getting interesting. We’ll have to reserve judgment until we can install this software update on our Logitech Revue box, but for now, clearly this update has great potential. It makes perfect sense for Google — purveyor of Android, the Chrome browser, YouTube and by the way, the world’s search expert — to leverage these powerful capabilities in its TV set-top.

The hurdle Google needs to navigate is not so much a technical or software one, but a matter of negotiating and arm-twisting of content providers. Will the company gain cooperation from TV networks and movie studios, allowing their content to be searchable on the Google TV platform? That’s the key to Google TV’s success.

Web Science: Studying the Internet to Protect Our Future

Since the World Wide Web blossomed in the mid-1990s, it has exploded to more than 15 billion pages that touch almost all aspects of modern life. Today more and more people’s jobs depend on the Web. Media, banking and health care are being revolutionized by it. And governments are even considering how to run their countries with it. Little appreciated, however, is the fact that the Web is more than the sum of its pages.

Vast emergent properties have arisen that are transforming society. E-mail led to instant messaging, which has led to social networks such as Facebook. The transfer of documents led to file-sharing sites such as Napster, which have led to user-generated portals such as YouTube. And tagging content with labels is creating online communities that share everything from concert news to parenting tips.

But few investigators are studying how such emergent properties have actally happened, how we might harness them, what new phenomena may be coming or what any of this might mean for humankind. A new branch of science—Web science—aims to address such issues. The timing fits history: computers were built first, and computer science followed, which subsequently improved computing significantly. Web science was launched as a formal discipline in November 2006, when the two of us and our colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Southampton in England announced the beginning of a Web Science Research Initiative. Leading researchers from 16 of the world’s top universities have since expanded on that effort.
